Plant Description

Calendula is a marigold plant that has long been used for its skin health benefits. The medicinal part of the Calendula plant is a beautiful, deeply rich colored orange and yellow flower. Calendula oil is made by infusing the flowers in carrier oils such as olive oil, MCT, hemp or avocado oil. The oil can be used on its own or as an ingredient in ointments, balms, creams, or lotions. It can also be made in a tincture and tea or put into a capsule.

I decided I was going to grow Calendula. Since Calendula is a Marigold, I bought Marigold seeds, planted, harvested, and prepped them. After an entire season of growing and prepping, I discovered a very important fact:

Calendula is a Marigold
But a Marigold is NOT a Calendula

If you try using a Marigold, you will quickly learn that it smells very bad. VERY VERY BAD!!! Learn from my mistake. If you don't have Calendula seeds or the plants growing, just order the Calendula flowers from Amazon for a few dollars. Cheap, and you get a lot for your money.

Alternatively, if you do not want to make your own Calendula Salve, you can purchase pre-made salves from many places such as Etsy.com 

How to Make Calendula Salve

Making Calendula Salve is very simple. The easiest way to learn how to make a Calendula salve is to simply watch how on Youtube. 

Here is how I made it. I purchased:

• Calendula flowers
• Beeswax in 1oz blocks
• Olive Oil
• Small Jars wide enough for your finger

I filled a mason jar with calendula flowers and then filled the jar with oil coving all the flowers. (Use a butter-knife to get all the air bubbles out of the mixture.) Place a lid on it and put it in a cabinet for 4-6 weeks.

When infused, strain the flowers from the oil and discard the flowers. Congratulations, you now have Calendula-infused oil.

To turn the oil into a salve, gradually heat the oil in a pot, adding a 1oz block of beeswax for every 1 cup of oil. Once melted and combined, pour the liquid into individual containers. Let it cool and you now have a salve.

*Additionally, you can add a few drops of scented essential oils to the salve while it's in liquid form. Just make sure the scents are skin-safe.
